We are excited about the latest design award. The Cuby multifunctional gazebo and Polys variable planter received the prestigious GOOD DESIGN award for 2022. Their creators are David Karásek, Viktor Šašinka and Michael Tomalik.

This famous award was founded in 1950 by the already-renowned designers Eero Saarinen and husband and wife Charles and Ray Eames. It is the oldest and globally the most acclaimed award program to honor high-quality design all over the world, organized under the auspices of The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies. The number of contenders for this design award has continuously grown and, according to the organizers, 2022 was a record-breaking year. So we may be all the more pleased that this year’s list of award winners again includes a Czech brand.

Polys, many reasons for a single solution.

Polys is a modular system of planters whose variability allows for a broad spectrum of use both outdoors and indoors. „Plants are grown in cylindrical containers of various diameters and heights that seem to grow from the platform joining all the containers into a single whole,“ says the creator, designer Michael Tomalik, explaining his intention, and adds: „Together with the containers, the plants become a part of a living whole, a sort of micro-landscape in which each plant only makes sense in relation to the others.“ David Karásek, in whose design studio the product was created, explains: „Polys draws inspiration from a free arrangement of planters as seen in garden centers or shelves at home. This product brings order to arrangements like that and takes this aesthetic into a public space.“

East or west, Cuby outdoors.

„We want to live outdoors. This is both our motto and the meaning of creation,“ says Viktor Šašinka, designer and co-creator of the Cuby gazebo. To work, study, dine or just lounge. Out of this need and love for public space, the Cuby range was created. The cubic structure is drawn in space for the most varied use in any place. The firm and robust frame is the basis for almost unlimited chameleon-like transformations. A closed cell surrounded by wood isolates you from the outside world, while the louvered wall changes a hiding place into a fully transparent one in a single move. You may relax on loungers or a daydream bed, while a dining table with benches with LED lights and USB chargers may serve as an outdoor office. Cuby may either stand on its own or form a part of multiple-element assemblies, be anchored under the tiling or on the tiling with its own floor. It is a strong response to a demand for greater intimacy in the public space – but not only that.
