No ghost stories here - just benches! Hněvín Castle

August 2025

Hněvín has become a popular place not only for concerts, theater performances, or thematic programs, but also for weddings, celebrations, and intimate gatherings. From a previously closed historic building, it has once again become a lively and welcoming place for all visitors. We spoke with Simona Mann, who, together with colleagues, is behind a series of transformations that bring Hněvín up to today's standards. She shared insights not only about furniture from our workshop but also about all the latest news and future plans.

Hněvín Castle is a neo-Gothic cultural monument. Visitors can enjoy a variety of experiences – often unexpected ones. Are they surprised by what Hněvín offers, or do they usually come with clear expectations?

Most are pleasantly surprised. Hněvín is not a typical castle with exhibits behind glass cases – it offers experiences instead. Even active visitors will find plenty to enjoy – the grounds feature several via ferrata climbing routes, and during the season, there are theater performances, concerts, yoga sessions, and physiotraining classes. And for those who prefer a calmer experience, there are outdoor tables for playing "Člověče, nezlob se" or "Sorry"or chess, or they can simply relax on a deck chair in the shade.

What is the location of Hněvín?

Visitors are enchanted by the view from the castle tower, from which you can see very far on clear days, or by the meticulously maintained garden with centuries-old chestnuts. This spring, we also opened a new photo point in the shape of the sages’ stone, from which you can see the Most Lake – a thematic reference to the alchemist Kelley, who once worked at Hněvín. On weekends, the observatory is also open, featuring a historic Gustav Heyde telescope from 1912.

When we touched upon the games "Člověče, nezlob se" or "Sorry" and chess, which are part of the Tably furniture collection – how did the idea to combine a playful element with urban furniture come about?

We wanted to create a place where entire families would feel at ease – after all, they are our most frequent visitors. We see playful elements such as "Člověče, nezlob se" or "Sorry" or chess as a subtle yet very enjoyable addition. In fact, adults regularly come here just to play chess. The atmosphere of Hněvín naturally invites this – it offers tranquility, a beautiful setting, and a unique view.

There’s certainly nothing „ghostly“ about the other pieces of furniture at Hněvín – such as the benches. Was it important for you to incorporate modern design into the surrounding space?

We carefully consulted the choice of benches with the architects from DL Studio, who are in charge of the overall reconstruction of the restaurant, halls, and future rooms that will be part of the planned hotel. The aim was for all the elements – including the outdoor furniture – to fit into a unified concept of reviving Hněvín.

We want visitors to feel comfortable here, while at the same time ensuring that the visual aspect respects the character of the place and develops it sensitively. With mmcité’s products, we’ve managed to achieve that.

You also bring playfulness into your exhibitions – can visitors look forward to interactive experiences inside the castle as well?

At present, we are reconstructing the exhibition of the alchemist Edward Kelley, which will once again be an engaging and slightly interactive element – we want not only to inform visitors but also to draw them into the story.
We will also be „playing“ on the plates – the upcoming menu in the Kelly restaurant will be inspired, among other things, by alchemy, so guests can expect a truly unique experience.

When will it be open?

The opening of the restaurant was delayed a bit – renovation in a heritage-preserved space is very demanding and requires great care. If everything goes according to plan, we will open in the fall of this year.

What’s around the castle?
Where should we go for a trip?

The town of Most has truly flourished in recent years and offers many great places to visit. I definitely recommend a visit to Lake Most with its beautifully clear water, and just a short walk from there, you can enjoy wakeboarding on Lake Matylda. For outdoor lovers, there’s the Benedikt recreational area or the beautiful trail to Ressl hill.
Another point of interest is the relocated church, which is worth a visit. Horse lovers can head to the local hippodrome, while motorsport fans will enjoy the autodrome. The area around the castle thus offers a wide range of options for excursions and active relaxation.

Will you surprise visitors in the coming years with new experiences, such as the already mentioned hotel?

If everything goes well, in 2027 we plan to open a fully renovated boutique hotel directly within the castle grounds, along with two new halls for cultural and social events. This will be another significant step in revitalizing Hněvín, making it a truly exceptional place for visitors and the local community alike.
