In addition to our other offerings, we also manufacture our products with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) -certified Jatoba wood. This sustainable choice meets the most rigorous standards for responsible logging in the Amazon rainforest. Workers only return to areas after a careful 30-year waiting period following the last harvest, ensuring the forest's health and longevity. Its exceptional hardness, twice that of European oak on the Brinell scale, makes it ideal for public space applications.

Controlled logging

We practice strictly controlled logging, acting as a "health cut" for the Amazon rainforest. This selective process improves the overall health of the ecosystem. Each tree is meticulously registered, has its own "birth certificate", and tracked, ensuring responsible harvesting and allowing us to monitor the rainforest's regeneration. Choosing controlled logging helps mitigate the risk of monoculture plantations, protecting the natural biodiversity and supporting the stability of local communities within the Amazon.

Properties of Jatoba wood

Jatoba has several exceptional properties. It is very resistant to weather influences and is stable over a long period of time. It gains its stability thanks to the natural environment of the Amazon rainforest, where it grows. High humidity makes it resistant not only to weather changes and UV radiation, but also to insects, pests and fungi. It has a Janka value of 11,950N (2686 lbf). Wood classified with a Class 1 Durability rating need a Janka value of 10k N (2500 lbf) or greater. It is this characteristic that provides Jatoba with minimal maintenance and can last up to 30 years in public spaces. In additon, we manufacture all our products in such a way that individual parts can be easily repaired or replaced after decades, and this also applies to wooden elements.

Less trees, more wood

Another important aspect to consider when choosing Jatoba wood is that the yield from a single tree is several times higher, up to 50%, than that of most European woods. A tree with a wide, straight trunk and careful processing contribute to minimizing waste. Alternative European woods are much more knotty, with trunks that bend in different directions. Processing lumber from these trees naturally creates more waste and the whole process is more energy-intensive.

Our production in Brazil

In South America, Brazil, in the city of Sao Bento do Sul, lies the second production site of mmcité products. It is no coincidence that we chose this continent. The markets of North and South America are an important part of the network of cities where mmcité products are located. This location gives us direct access to the source of Jatoba wood, enabling careful selection. It also streamlines the transportation of materials and finished goods, ultimately minimizing our carbon footprint.
