Public spaces do not always require years of planning or major investment. Sometimes meaningful change begins with people who care enough to improve the places they use every day.
The space outside GRG7 Kandlgasse High School in Vienna's Neubau district has become a welcoming gathering place created by the entire school community. What was once an ordinary stretch of sidewalk and curbside parking now serves as a place for conversation, relaxation, and everyday school life. Students, teachers, parents, and neighbors worked side by side to make it happen.
The community installation took place on June 8. As part of the project, mmcité donated a Platform parklet to the school community. Working alongside the mmcité team, students assembled the structure themselves directly outside the school, becoming active participants in shaping a place they use every day.
The project is rooted in the principles of tactical urbanism. Rather than serving as the final solution, this temporary installation marks the beginning of a longer transformation. Raised planters built from reclaimed pallets, new planting, and urban furniture have introduced a new identity to the street. Over the coming months, the space will function as a living laboratory, with observations from everyday use helping inform its permanent design.
Projects like this remind us that meaningful change does not always begin with large scale redevelopment. Often, it starts with a temporary intervention that allows people to experience a place in a different way. As communities become active participants in shaping public space, they develop a stronger sense of ownership and a deeper connection to the places they share.
