Boston Billerica – Peggy Hannon-Rizza Recreation Complex

Finished: 2022

Location: Boston, Billerica

The Peggy Hannon-Rizza Recreation Complex in Billerica, Massachusetts, is a community-focused recreational facility designed to offer a variety of sports and leisure amenities for visitors of all ages. Completed in 2022, the renovation project transformed the complex into a multi-generational space that includes two synthetic turf fields, two irrigated natural grass softball fields, and a host of other amenities that support active and passive recreation.

Designed by Warner Larson Landscape Architects, the park integrates thoughtful design elements to enhance the visitor experience. Notably, a 12-foot-high central lawn mound, constructed from on-site soils, provides 360-degree views of the fields, creating an ideal spectator vantage point. Additional features include state-of-the-art sports lighting, spectator seating, and an outdoor game plaza that promotes community gathering and interaction. Site furnishings from mmcité include Rautster tables, Vera and Vera Solo benches, Bistrot tables, Lot bollards, and Prax litter bins.

The complex also includes the Sam Colangelo Tennis Courts, available for public use and adaptable for tennis or pickleball, appealing to a diverse range of interests. The parking and drop-off loop, concession building with restrooms, and a meeting room add convenience, while bioretention areas and educational signage highlight environmental sustainability.

The Peggy Hannon-Rizza Recreation Complex exemplifies a well-rounded approach to public space design, balancing functionality, sustainability, and community engagement. With ample space for sports, events, and relaxation, it has quickly become a cherished

gathering place, enhancing the quality of life for Billerica residents and providing an inviting environment for recreation and community connection.
